Mathematics transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries and equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. At Riverside, we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics and recognise its application to everyday life.

Our curriculum ensures children apply mastery skills. We follow the White Rose maths scheme, with Total Maths resources and NCETM spine materials used to extend fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Our children should also apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.

Maths Progression and Curriculum Overview:

At Riverside, we are taking part in the new Mastering Number initiative from the NCETM and Maths Hubs. The project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
