Welcome to Riverside's Computing page.

Here, you will find information about the subject and how we teach it at our school, as well as photos and videos of children enjoying the subject and their work.

Attached is a PDF document from Purple Mash called 'Parenting in a Digital World'.

Overview taken from the guide: '2Simple have put together this informative guide to help support you in enabling your child to grow into a responsible digital citizen who is able to keep themselves safe while, at the same time, getting the very best from the digital world. In this guide, you will find tips and advice for each of the key areas of online safety for primary-aged children. Each of these areas is further broken down into tips for parents of children aged 5 to 7 and for those of children aged 7 to 11.'

Computing Vision

At Riverside, we understand how technology is an aspect of everyday life more than ever, and the importance of children being computer literate and masters of technology. We want to model to the children how to positively use technology by giving them opportunities to explore it in a cross-curricular manner. Educating our children will ensure that they are fully prepared and will help to prevent issues such as cyber bullying and other issues seen with technology. Our computing curriculum enables children to share their learning in creative forms. We support our families who lack resources and knowledge to continue this learning at home. During COVID-19, we shared school devices and regularly communicated with families to support them. We understand how accessing technology is powerful for providing our pupils with ample opportunities to develop, and strive to overcome barriers to this. Our curriculum is knowledge rich, and underpinning each lesson is the opportunity for children to apply and build on prior knowledge, developing their new skills. We encourage colleagues to utilise technology in a cross-curricular manner to continue the children’s learning and development. Our curriculum is planned and sequenced and able to be adapted to suit the needs of our pupils.

Key features of our curriculum:

At Riverside, we want to teach our children how to use technology safely by embedding e-safety across our curriculum, as well as using it positively and responsibly. Our broad curriculum covering computer science, digital literacy and information technology ensures that our children will be confident creators, gaining skills to prepare them for all 21st century challenges, as mentioned in the children’s school motto.

 Our curriculum covers computer science, information technology and digital literacy.

We place great focus on basic skills, ensuring that elements such as typing are explicitly taught. We want our pupils to be computer literate and fluent with a variety of tools and programs. We hope they leave Riverside as safe, confident and independent users of technology.

We will encourage curiosity and excitement with regular cross-curricular links and ways of including professionals from the outside world through curriculum sessions delivered by hi-impact. We will also endeavour to utilise the children’s computing skills across all areas of the curriculum.

Our curriculum is sequenced so that topics are returned to and built upon in subsequent year groups so that all children can see their own progress.
