At Riverside Primary School, we provide an engaging and inspiring curriculum that promotes our core value, Ancora Imparo, ‘I am still learning’- Michelangelo, aged 87.

Our curriculum aims to give pupils a love of art. Children are encouraged to think and act creatively, to explore all aspects of creativity, personal and social, exploring art for a variety of reasons and in a range of contexts Eg. History and R.E.

The art and design curriculum aims to broaden children’s understanding of the importance of art in the wider world and gives them the opportunity to appreciate it. Cultural capital is further enhanced through gallery visits and bringing art to life in a variety of collaborative experiences.

Most importantly, our aim is for the children to enjoy the artistic journey, engage in creative activities and inspire a lifelong appreciation of art in all its forms.

We are very excited to be starting our Artsmark journey. Watch this space…

Key features of our curriculum:

At Riverside we believe that the role of Art and Design is to provide pupils with opportunities to express themselves creatively and to embed a knowledge and appreciation of famous artists and their work. The teaching of art and design offers our pupils the ability to access a wealth of experiences, developing skills in drawing, textiles and sculpture.

NC guidelines purpose of study

Ø  To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

Ø  To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

Ø  To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

Ø  To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

We will encourage a love and appreciation of art through trips to galleries and museums.  There will also be a focus on children learning the technical vocabulary associated with the skills they are learning. There will be cross-curricular links and ways of including professionals from the outside world.
