School of Sanctuary Award

On the evening of Monday 9th July, pupils from Riverside Primary School were delighted to receive a standing ovation following their presentation on Refugees to the Mayor and Councillors of Wirral.

The children were invited by Lord Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Watt to take part in the council meeting following a chance encounter at Wallasey Town Hall. A group of children from Riverside went to drop off work completed throughout the school during ‘Refugee Week’.  This included a letter from the children to the Councillors, expressing their desire to see more done to welcome and care for refugees and asylum seekers on the Wirral.

We have spent the whole of this year learning of the plight of refugees and making our school more welcoming in preparation for new children arriving, as part of our School of Sanctuary accreditation.

The children involved in the presentation at the Town Hall, were amazed at the genuine interest shown by the Mayor and Councillors. One of the boys described it as the best day of his life, ‘Even better than Christmas!’
